Types of Weight Loss Procedures Offered at ALO Bariatrics e Tide
Bariatric surgeries are divided into three categories: restrictive procedures, malabsorptive procedures, and combination procedures.
Restrictive procedures reduce the size of the stomach, restricting the amount of food and calories that can be taken in during a meal. Malabsorptive procedures bypass parts of the small intestine, limiting how the food and calories are absorbed by the body. Combination procedures do both, restricting food intake and limiting absorption all at once.
At ALO Bariatrics, there are several surgical techniques available for patients to choose from, including:

Gastric Sleeve
Gastric sleeve surgery (also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy) is one of the most popular forms of bariatric surgery. During a sleeve gastrectomy, one of our doctors will reduce the size of the stomach by approximately 75 percent, restricting the amount of food that you can eat and helping you lose excess weight. At ALO Bariatrics, we also offer single incision gastric sleeve surgery, which is performed through a special port placed through a single incision in the belly button.

Gastric Bypass
A gastric bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y, consists of two parts. First, the stomach is reduced to roughly the size of a shot glass. Next, a large portion of the small intestine is removed and the new stomach pouch is reattached to the remaining intestines. The procedure is both restrictive and malabsorptive, reducing the amount of food intake and restricting how many calories and nutrients can be absorbed by the small intestines.

Duodenal Switch
A duodenal switch is very similar to a gastric bypass. During the procedure, the surgeon will reduce the size of the stomach as he would during a sleeve gastrectomy, remove a large part of the small intestines as he would during a gastric bypass, and finally, connect the small intestine to the duodenum. A duodenal switch can result in significant weight loss, but the procedure also has an increased risk of nutritional deficiencies following surgery. We also provide SADI-S.

Mini Gastric Bypass
A mini gastric bypass is also similar to a traditional gastric bypass except that the surgeon removes a smaller portion of the small intestine. Because there is less rerouting necessary, the mini gastric bypass has a shorter surgery time and a reduced risk of surgical complications compared to a traditional bypass.

LAP-BAND
LAP-BAND®, also known as gastric banding, is a restrictive weight loss procedure. During the conservative surgery, one of our doctors will place an adjustable band around the stomach, dividing it into a small pouch and a large pouch. With a gastric band, the patient should feel full faster, restricting how much they can eat and resulting in weight loss. The gastric band is removable and can be adjusted during subsequent surgeries to meet the evolving needs of the patient.

Gastric Balloon
Gastric balloon surgery is another restrictive weight loss technique that limits the space within the stomach, restricting the amount a patient can eat. During the procedure, a silicone balloon is lowered down the patient’s throat into the stomach, so there are no incisions required. Once the balloon reaches the stomach, it is filled with saline and inflated to its desired size. This temporary tool is used to facilitate the development of healthier lifestyle habits.

Revision Surgery
While some patients are able to achieve their weight loss goals through their first bariatric surgery, others regain weight because they underwent outdated surgical techniques or chose a poorly trained bariatric surgery provider. Because of our excellent reputation, many patients visit ALO Bariatrics in Tijuana, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for revision surgery.

Is Weight Loss Surgery Safe?

All surgeries carry some degree of risk, but patients can reduce their risk of complications by choosing a reputable bariatric surgery provider with a track record of success.
Dr. Lopez and Dr. Ramirez have successfully performed thousands of weight loss procedures and are trained in the latest surgical techniques. Whenever possible, they use laparoscopic tools to perform surgery. Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery boasts several advantages for the patient, including a reduced risk of blood loss and less post-operative pain.

Weight Loss Surgery FAQs
How much weight can I lose?
Different surgeries can result in different degrees of weight loss. Many bariatric procedures, like sleeve gastrectomy or LAP-BAND surgery, can empower you to lose 50 percent or more of your excess weight in less than a year. The amount of weight loss you achieve will be influenced by your ability to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly after surgery.
Can bariatric surgery cure diabetes?
Bariatric surgery, particularly gastric bypass surgery, can lead to remission of type 2 diabetes. Weight loss surgery can also improve obstructive sleep apnea and reduce your risk of heart disease.
How do I prepare for weight loss surgery?
You will need to follow a pre-op diet for at least a week before your surgery in Tijuana, Guadalajara, or Puerto Vallarta. Patients with higher BMIs will need to start the pre-op diet earlier. There are two stages to the diet: a number of days eating a high-protein, low-carb diet, and then a number of days only consuming clear liquids. We will provide custom instructions when you schedule your procedure with us.
What is recovery like?
After your surgery, you will remain in Tijuana, Guadalajara, or Puerto Vallarta for a few days so our doctors can monitor you. During this time, we will provide you with detailed instructions so you can have a safe recovery. You will need to follow a post-operative diet so your stomach has time to heal. It will be about four weeks before you are able to eat solid food. You should avoid strenuous activity for at least six weeks. We will remain in contact with you once you return home, so we will always be available to answer any questions that come up.
Will my results be permanent?
Most bariatric surgeries permanently alter the digestive system, so the amount you are able to eat and the way your body responds to food will be changed for good. In terms of weight loss, most patients experience significant results in the first 12 months after surgery. However, if you fail to eat a healthy diet or exercise regularly, it is possible that you will start to regain weight. For prolonged weight loss success, you must adopt a healthy lifestyle.
