See What's Possible

Each year, hundreds of patients travel to Tijuana, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to experience safe, effective bariatric surgery at affordable prices. Take a look at our before-and-after gallery to see for yourself how bariatric surgery can help patients overcome obesity.

Types of Weight Loss Procedures Offered at ALO Bariatrics

Bariatric surgeries are divided into three categories: restrictive procedures, malabsorptive procedures, and combination procedures.

Restrictive procedures reduce the size of the stomach, restricting the amount of food and calories that can be taken in during a meal. Malabsorptive procedures bypass parts of the small intestine, limiting how the food and calories are absorbed by the body. Combination procedures do both, restricting food intake and limiting absorption all at once.

At ALO Bariatrics, there are several surgical techniques available for patients to choose from, including:

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve surgery (also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy) is one of the most popular forms of bariatric surgery. During a sleeve gastrectomy, one of our doctors will reduce the size of the stomach by approximately 75 percent, restricting the amount of food that you can eat and helping you lose excess weight. At ALO Bariatrics, we also offer single incision gastric sleeve surgery, which is performed through a special port placed through a single incision in the belly button.

Gastric bypass surgery in Mexico

Gastric Bypass

gastric bypass, also known a Roux-en-Y, consists of two parts. First, the stomach is reduced to roughly the size of a shot glass Next, a large portion of the small intestine is removed and the new stomach pouch is reattached to th remaining intestines. The procedure is both restrictive and malabsorptive, reducing th amount of food intake and restricting how many calories and nutrients can be absorbed by the smal intestines.

Duodenal Switch

duodenal switch is ver similar to a gastric bypass. During the procedure, the surgeon will reduce the size of the stomach as h would during a sleeve gastrectomy, remove a large part of the small intestines as he would during gastric bypass, and finally, connect the small intestine to the duodenum. A duodenal switch ca result in significant weight loss, but the procedure also has an increased risk o nutritional deficiencies following surgery. We also provide SADI-S.

Mini Gastric Bypass

min gastric bypass is also similar to a traditional gastric bypas except that the surgeon removes a smaller portion of the small intestine Because there is less rerouting necessary, the mini gastric bypas has a shorter surgery time and a reduced risk of surgica complications compared to a traditional bypass.

Lap-band surgery in Mexico

LAP-BAND

LAP-BAND®, also known as gastric banding, is a restrictive weight loss procedure. During the conservative surgery, one of our doctors will place an adjustable band around the stomach, dividing it into a small pouch and a large pouch. With a gastric band, the patient should feel full faster, restricting how much they can eat and resulting in weight loss. The gastric band is removable and can be adjusted during subsequent surgeries to meet the evolving needs of the patient.

Gastric Balloon

Gastric balloon surgery is another restrictive weight loss technique that limits the space within the stomach, restricting the amount a patient can eat. During the procedure, a silicone balloon is lowered down the patient's throat into the stomach, so there are no incisions required. Once the balloon reaches the stomach, it is filled with saline and inflated to its desired size. This temporary tool is used to facilitate the development of healthier lifestyle habits.

Revision Surgery

While some patients are able to achieve their weight loss goals through their first bariatric surgery, others regain weight because they underwent outdated surgical techniques or chose a poorly trained bariatric surgery provider. Because of our excellent reputation, many patients visit ALO Bariatrics in Tijuana, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for revision surgery

Who Qualifies for Weight Loss Surgery?

According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, there are three basic qualifications for patients considering weight loss surgery:

BMI of over 40 or +100 Pounds Overweight

Most patients who have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 or patients with more than 100 pounds in excess weight are typically good candidates for surgery.

High BMI and Comorbidity

Candidates may also have a BMI greater than 35 and one or more comorbidity. Comorbidities are chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and heart disease.

Unsuccessful Attempts at Weight Loss

Bariatric surgery should be a last resort option when other long-term attempts at weight loss have not worked. If you have tried diet, exercise, or medication but have not experienced substantial, lasting weight loss, you may be a good candidate for bariatric surgery.

Is Weight Loss Surgery Safe?

All surgeries carry some degree of risk, but patients can reduce their risk of complications by choosing a reputable bariatric surgery provider with a track record of success.

Dr. Lopez have successfully performed thousands of weight loss procedures and are trained in the latest surgical techniques. Whenever possible, they use laparoscopic tools to perform surgery. Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery boasts several advantages for the patient, including a reduced risk of blood loss and less post-operative pain.

What Is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Most of the weight loss surgeries we provide in Tijuana, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, are performed laparoscopically. This means that our doctors perform the procedures by making tiny incisions and inserting thin, ultra-precise tools through the incisions. Then, guided by a surgical camera (also known as a laparoscope), our doctors are able to modify the internal organs without exposing them. This modern technique provides many benefits, including:

Weight Loss Surgery FAQs

There is no substitute for meeting with our doctors to ask any questions you have about weight loss surgery. However, we understand that if you are awaiting your appointment or still trying to decide whether to reach out, you are probably anxious to learn more about how weight loss surgery will affect you. For now, our Tijuana-based practice invites you to explore these answers to some of the most common weight loss surgery questions:

How much weight can I lose?

Different surgeries can result in different degrees of weight loss. Many bariatric procedures, like sleeve gastrectomy or LAP-BAND surgery, can empower you to lose 50 percent or more of your excess weight in less than a year. The amount of weight loss you achieve will be influenced by your ability to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly after surgery.

Can bariatric surgery cure diabetes?

Bariatric surgery, particularly gastric bypass surgery, can lead to remission of type 2 diabetes. Weight loss surgery can also improve obstructive sleep apnea and reduce your risk of heart disease.

How do I prepare for weight loss surgery?

You will need to follow a pre-op diet for at least a week before your surgery in Tijuana, Guadalajara, or Puerto Vallarta. Patients with higher BMIs will need to start the pre-op diet earlier. There are two stages to the diet: a number of days eating a high-protein, low-carb diet, and then a number of days only consuming clear liquids. We will provide custom instructions when you schedule your procedure with us.

What is recovery like?

After your surgery, you will remain in Tijuana, Guadalajara, or Puerto Vallarta for a few days so our doctors can monitor you. During this time, we will provide you with detailed instructions so you can have a safe recovery. You will need to follow a post-operative diet so your stomach has time to heal. It will be about four weeks before you are able to eat solid food. You should avoid strenuous activity for at least six weeks. We will remain in contact with you once you return home, so we will always be available to answer any questions that come up.

Will my results be permanent?

Most bariatric surgeries permanently alter the digestive system, so the amount you are able to eat and the way your body responds to food will be changed for good. In terms of weight loss, most patients experience significant results in the first 12 months after surgery. However, if you fail to eat a healthy diet or exercise regularly, it is possible that you will start to regain weight. For prolonged weight loss success, you must adopt a healthy lifestyle.

What is the Safest Form of Weight Loss Surgery?

What is the safest form of weight loss surgery?

The safety of weight loss surgery in Tijuana depends on the surgeon and team of healthcare professionals you work with. While some procedures carry a higher risk of developing short-term or long-term complications, they are all safe when performed in the right hands.

The Perfect Post-Weight Loss Surgery Diet

Post bariatric surgery diet

The steps you take to lead a healthier life are just as important as the surgery itself. Your diet right after surgery will be liquid so your body can heal from the operation. Slowly, you will consume thicker, more nutritious liquids and purees over time. When your surgeon says it’s okay to do so, you’ll eat softer foods and progress to solid foods. It’s crucial to follow the advice of your care team so that your diet meets the body’s nutritional demands.

Recovering From Weight Loss Surgery in Mexico

Recovering from bariatric surgery: what to expect.

Your recovery from weight loss surgery is a gradual process that shouldn’t be rushed. You’ll work every step of the way with your care team from ALO Bariatrics and receive detailed instructions on your diet and exercise expectations.
It’s important to follow directions very closely during your recovery. Not doing so could damage the progress you’ve made and, in the worst cases, require another surgery.
