Where Each Guide Fits in Your Timeline
Bariatric nutrition is sequential. Each phase builds on the previous one — here's where each guide comes in.
Pre-Op Diet
Shrink the liver, prepare the body, start the mental shift.
Post-Op Diet
Liquids → soft → regular foods, in carefully timed phases.
Recovery Protocol
Activity, incision care, supplements, follow-up appointments.
Annual Blood Work
Monitor & adjust supplements. Forever.
The Pillars of Bariatric Nutrition
No matter which procedure you have or how far out you are, three things determine your long-term success.
Protein First, Always
Protein heals tissue, preserves muscle (so you lose fat, not muscle), and keeps you full longer than carbs or fat. Build every meal around it.
Hydration is a Project
Sip continuously throughout the day. Dehydration is the #1 cause of post-op ER visits — and it's 100% preventable.
Supplements for Life
Bariatric multivitamin, B12, calcium citrate, vitamin D, iron — required for life because surgery permanently changes nutrient absorption.
Frequently Asked Questions
How strict do I need to be with the pre-op diet?
Very strict — for medical reasons. The pre-op diet shrinks your liver, which sits in front of your stomach. A non-shrunk liver makes surgery harder, longer, and riskier. Patients who follow the pre-op diet faithfully have measurably shorter surgeries and faster recoveries. See the full pre-op guide.
What happens if I skip a phase of the post-op diet?
Skipping phases — even if you feel fine — can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, leaks, or stomach dilation. The phases exist because your stomach needs time to heal between texture changes. Do NOT skip ahead. Follow the timeline your surgical team gave you. View clinical post-op diet.
Do I really have to take supplements forever?
Yes — non-negotiable. Bariatric surgery permanently changes how your body absorbs nutrients. Even if you eat perfectly, food alone cannot meet your micronutrient needs. A bariatric multivitamin plus targeted supplements (B12, calcium, vitamin D, iron) are required for life. Annual blood work confirms levels are on track.
How often should I do blood work after bariatric surgery?
It depends on your procedure. Sleeve patients: 3, 6, 12 months, then yearly. Bypass & duodenal switch: 3, 6, 12, 18 months, then yearly for life. Your surgeon may add interim labs if a deficiency is detected. See full schedule.
Can I get a meal plan or work directly with your nutritionist?
Yes. Every ALO Bariatrics patient gets lifetime nutrition support from our in-house team. You can WhatsApp our nutritionist anytime with questions, meal-plan adjustments, or troubleshooting. It's included with your surgery package — no extra cost, no time limit.
What if I have specific dietary restrictions (vegetarian, allergies, religion)?
Tell your coordinator before surgery. We adapt the pre-op and post-op nutrition plans to vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free, and dairy-free patterns regularly. Protein needs stay the same — only the protein sources change.
Have a nutrition question?
