Your Weight Loss Surgery Options
Gastric Sleeve
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a procedure that reduces the amount of food you can eat before feeling full. During the gastric sleeve procedure, your surgeon will remove a large portion of the stomach. The resulting "gastric sleeve" will be approximately the size of a banana. Because patients reduce their food intake, they can expect to experience dramatic weight loss, potentially losing 50 percent or more of their excess weight. In some circumstances, your surgeon can perform this surgery with the advanced single-incision technique.
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass is a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure, meaning it reduces the amount of food you can eat and limits your body's ability to absorb calories. During the gastric bypass procedure, our bariatric surgeons will reduce the size of the stomach and reroute a portion of the small intestine. Because food now bypasses a significant portion of the intestine, fewer nutrients are absorbed, which can lead to healthy, sustainable weight loss. Additionally, gastric bypass has been linked to the remission of type 2 diabetes.
Duodenal Switch
Duodenal switch is another bariatric surgery that involves both reducing the size of the stomach and rerouting the intestines. Like gastric bypass, it leads to healthy weight loss by decreasing the amount of food that a patient can eat and altering the way the body absorbs calories. Duodenal switch is the most involved weight loss surgery we offer at ALO Bariatrics, and it is typically reserved for patients who have an extremely high body mass index (BMI) or who are seeking a revision of a previous gastric bypass or gastric sleeve.
LAP-BAND
LAP-BAND® surgery, also known as gastric banding, is the least invasive weight loss surgery that our practice provides in Guadalajara, Mexico. Patients like the LAP-BAND procedure because it does not involve the alteration of any internal organs. Also, it is both adjustable and reversible. Gastric banding involves placing a silicone ring around the stomach. The ring can then be inflated with saline fluid to restrict the capacity of the stomach. Patients will feel full after eating less food, which can potentially lead to gradual weight loss.
Revision Surgery
Sometimes, patients who undergo a gastric or metabolic procedure don't achieve their weight loss goals. Other patients may experience rapid weight loss before plateauing or regaining weight. When this happens, a revision procedure can help you achieve and maintain the weight loss you desire. The bariatric surgeons of ALO Bariatrics are able to perform a variety of revision procedures, including converting LAP-BAND surgeries to gastric sleeves or gastric sleeves to gastric bypasses.

Will I have a scar after bariatric surgery?
Because we almost always use laparoscopic methods, the resulting scars from weight loss surgery are small and discreet. During a laparoscopic procedure, your surgeon only has to make a few small incisions in the abdomen. Sometimes, he only has to make a single incision near the navel. Then, he inserts surgical cameras and precise tools through the incisions so that he can perform the surgery without creating a large scar.
Is weight loss surgery in Mexico safe?
Any surgery involves a certain amount of risk, but bariatric surgery with ALO Bariatrics in Mexico is just as safe as any weight loss procedure in the United States or Canada. Our surgeons have successfully completed many weight loss surgeries, and our partner hospitals in Guadalajara are clean and modern. Also, because we provide laparoscopic surgeries, the risk of infection is greatly reduced.
Does weight loss surgery replace diet and exercise?
Patients can expect to lose a significant amount of weight after bariatric surgery. However, shrinking the size of your stomach does not mean you can ignore diet and exercise. If you don't make adjustments to your lifestyle, you risk regaining weight. For the best weight loss results, bariatric patients need to eat a healthy diet and stay active.
