ALO Mexico pricing is all-inclusive: surgeon, hospital, anesthesia, medications, pre-op labs, post-op follow-up, airport pickup, and hotel. Flights not included.
What MSP covers, who qualifies, and how long it takes
Bariatric surgery is funded by the BC Medical Services Plan, but only through two programs, only with a referral, and only after a wait the province does not count from the day you were referred. Here is the official picture, with sources.
Where it is done
Two MSP-funded programs: Richmond Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Richmond Hospital (Vancouver Coastal Health) and the Island Health Bariatric Program at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. Both cover the consultation and the operation for BC residents. You cannot self-refer: a doctor or nurse practitioner faxes the referral package.
Who qualifies (Richmond program)
- Age 18 and over
- BMI 35+, or BMI 30–34.9 with metabolic disease (27.5+ for people of Asian descent)
- Stable mental health for 18 months
- No medical problems that make elective surgery unsafe, and the ability to follow the program
Victoria uses its own referral form and does not accept patients over 65.
How long it takes
Richmond tells patients not to call about a referral until 2.5 years have passed, “the current waitlist length of time”. Victoria reports under one year from referral to first clinic contact, followed by assessments before a surgery date. The provincial Surgical Wait Times site counts only the final leg, from the surgeon’s booking form to the operation, so the years before that never appear in the official number.
What MSP will not pay
Private surgery in BC or abroad. Care you need back home afterwards, including emergency visits, is covered like any other resident’s. Part of what you pay in Mexico can come back through the CRA medical expense tax credit.
