Where it is done and how you get in
Nova Scotia Health’s Weight Loss Surgery program operates at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, Dartmouth General Hospital and Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro. You cannot self-refer: your primary care provider submits the “Pathway to Bariatric Surgery” form, and the Halifax Obesity Network then walks you through the information session, the program diet, blood work and team appointments.
Who qualifies
- The program follows the Obesity Canada 2020 guideline it has adopted: surgery for BMI 40+, or BMI 35+ with an obesity-related disease
- Smoke-free for six months before surgery; the team states it will not operate on anyone using tobacco
- Commitment to the program diet, appointments and lifelong follow-up

How long it takes
The province publishes waits only from completion of the Obesity Network program. For Aug 2025 to Jul 2026 the QEII reported a median 126 days to consult and 200 days to surgery (90th percentile 203 and 288); Dartmouth General 28 and 38 days; Colchester East Hants 249 and 115 days. The months or years in the pre-surgical pathway are not counted, and the Network itself says it cannot answer wait-time questions.
