Gastric Sleeve in Turkey vs Mexico: Cost, Safety and Flights Compared
- Dr. López personally reviews every case
The short answer
Choose Turkey if you live in the UK, Ireland or continental Europe, the lowest headline price matters more than the package behind it, you can spend 8 to 10 days away, and you have verified the surgeon and the hospital yourself rather than trusting the brochure.
Choose Mexico if you want the surgeon named in writing, an accredited hospital and 12 months of follow-up included in the base price, English-speaking staff, and a 5-day trip. From the U.S. and Canada it is a 1–5-hour trip; from London, British Airways flies nonstop to San Diego and our driver takes you to Tijuana in 30 minutes.
For Australians and New Zealanders the honest comparison is Mexico versus Thailand, not Turkey; both trips are long, but Mexico via Los Angeles or Mexico City is shorter than Istanbul.
Price is the last thing to compare, not the first. The same Istanbul centre that advertises a £2,450 sleeve with “a surgeon team” charges £4,550 (about $6,100) once you ask for its named surgeon, a JCI hospital and a UK dietitian for 12 months. ALO includes all of that at $4,500 in Tijuana. Compare the package, not the headline.

Turkey vs Mexico, side by side
| 🇹🇷 Turkey (typical package) | 🇲🇽 Mexico (ALO Bariatrics) | |
|---|---|---|
| Advertised sleeve price | Budget tiers about €2,250–€3,500 (≈ $2,600–$4,000 USD) with “a surgeon team” and a boutique hospital. Tiers with a named surgeon, a JCI hospital and a 12-month dietitian: £4,550–£4,900 (≈ $6,100–$6,550) at Istanbul Bariatric Center | From $4,500 USD in Tijuana; $5,000 in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Named surgeon, accredited private hospital and 12 months of follow-up included, quoted in writing |
| Gastric bypass price | Agency listings from about €3,200; named-surgeon tiers £5,000–£5,350 (≈ $6,700–$7,150) | From $5,900 USD in Tijuana; $6,600 in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, same inclusions as the sleeve. Bypass cost details |
| What is usually included | Depends on the tier. Budget: surgery by a “surgeon team”, 2–4 hospital nights, transfers, an interpreter. Premium: a named surgeon, 3 hospital nights, a hotel and a dietitian, at roughly double the price | Surgery by Dr. López personally, hospital stay, hotel recovery nights, transfers, pre-op labs and EKG, medications, bilingual coordinator, 12 months of follow-up by the surgical team |
| Flight from New York / Toronto | About 10 hours nonstop each way | About 5 hours to Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta; 6 hours to San Diego, then 30 minutes with our driver to Tijuana |
| Flight from Los Angeles / Phoenix | About 13 hours, usually with a stop | 1 hour to San Diego (or a 2.5-hour drive) and 30 minutes with our driver to Tijuana |
| Flight from Sydney / Auckland | 20+ hours with one stop | About 14–15 hours to Mexico City or Los Angeles, then a short connection |
| Flight from London / Dublin | 4–4.5 hours nonstop: the reason Turkey is the default for UK and Irish patients | About 11 hours nonstop: British Airways flies London Heathrow to San Diego daily, and our driver meets you at the airport for the 30-minute ride to Tijuana. From Dublin, connect through London or a U.S. hub |
| Language | Interpreter provided; most surgeons and nurses speak limited English | English-speaking surgeon, coordinator and nursing team; Spanish also available |
| Who operates | Varies by package: ask whether the named surgeon operates personally or a team member does | Dr. Alejandro López, FACS, operates personally: 20,000+ bariatric procedures over 20 years |
| How to verify the surgeon | Since November 2025 the Ministry of Health requires an authorised obesity-surgery unit and a ministerial certificate for the surgeon: ask for both, plus the Turkish Medical Association registration, annual sleeve volume and leak rate | Public profiles: American College of Surgeons, IFSO, Mexican College of General Surgeons |
| After you fly home | Budget tiers: a coordinator on WhatsApp. A dietitian is included only in premium tiers. UK guidance (BOMSS) says your GP is not expected to follow private surgery for the first 2 years, so that gap is yours to fill | 12 months of scheduled follow-up by the surgical team itself, by WhatsApp, email and phone, plus a discharge summary for your own doctor |
| If something goes wrong | Complication cover varies by package; distance makes a return visit costly | Optional complication insurance you can add before travel; a return to Tijuana is a 1-hour flight for most of the western U.S. |
| Time away from home | Typically 7–10 days | Typically 5–6 days |
| Visa and entry | e-Visa or visa-free depending on your passport; check before booking | No visa for U.S., Canadian, UK, EU, Australian or NZ tourists |

What the price really covers
Turkish packages are cheap for three reasons, and only one of them is about you. The lira has lost most of its value against the dollar and the euro since 2021, so staff, hospital and hotel costs are very low in hard currency. Competition among hundreds of Istanbul clinics keeps advertised prices down. And many packages are sold by agencies that bundle a hotel and a transfer but leave out what costs money after you leave: the named surgeon, follow-up, revision policy and complication cover. The tiered price lists make this visible: the same Istanbul centre lists a sleeve at £2,450 with “a surgeon team” and at £4,550 with its named surgeon, a JCI hospital and a 12-month dietitian.
Mexico is not the cheapest headline price for a sleeve and does not try to be. What ALO’s $4,500 buys is the premium tier: Dr. López operates personally in every case, in an accredited private hospital 30 minutes from a U.S. airport, with English-speaking staff and 12 months of follow-up by his own team. Here is what the totals look like once flights and time away are counted.
| Sample all-in budget, gastric sleeve | 🇹🇷 Turkey (Istanbul, €2,600 budget package) | 🇲🇽 Mexico (ALO Tijuana, $4,500 package) |
|---|---|---|
| Patient flying from London | Package ≈ $3,000 + flight $250–$400 + extras ≈ $3,900–$4,050, 8–9 days away | Package $4,500 + flight $900–$1,300 + extras ≈ $6,050–$6,450, 6–7 days away |
| Patient flying from London, like-for-like tier (named surgeon, JCI hospital, 12-month dietitian) | Package £4,550 ≈ $6,100 + flight $250–$400 + extras ≈ $7,000–$7,150, 8–9 days away | Package $4,500, which already includes all three + flight $900–$1,300 + extras ≈ $6,050–$6,450, 6–7 days away |
| Patient flying from New York or Toronto | Package ≈ $3,000 + flight $900–$1,300 + extras ≈ $4,550–$4,950, 8–10 days away | Package $4,500 + flight $350–$600 + extras ≈ $5,500–$5,750, 5–6 days away |
| Patient flying from Los Angeles or Phoenix | Package ≈ $3,000 + flight $1,100–$1,500 + extras ≈ $4,750–$5,150, 9–10 days away | Package $4,500 + flight or drive $100–$300 + extras ≈ $5,250–$5,450, 5 days away |
| Patient flying from Sydney | Package ≈ $3,000 + flight $1,500–$2,000 + extras ≈ $5,150–$5,650, 10+ days away | Package $4,500 + flight $1,300–$1,800 + extras ≈ $6,450–$6,950, 7–8 days away |
Extras (≈ $650) counted the same on both sides: optional complication insurance (≈ $285), first-year vitamins (≈ $300) and the patient’s meals. Companion costs, lost income for the extra days and any revision are not included. Fares are economy averages for 2026 and change with the season.
Safety: what the data says, and how to verify any clinic
The UK Foreign Office travel advice for Turkey states: “We are aware of 7 British nationals having died in Turkey in 2025 following medical procedures”, and that others have needed further treatment after complications. It recommends discussing your plans with your own doctor first and researching providers independently, because the companies selling packages have a financial interest. That is good advice for Turkey, for Mexico and for anywhere else.
None of this means Turkish surgery is unsafe. Istanbul has JCI-accredited hospitals and bariatric teams with excellent results. The pattern in the reported cases is the same one we see in Mexico: patients chose by price, did not know who would operate, and had no one responsible for them once they flew home.
Two more facts help you judge any Turkish offer. Since 12 November 2025, Turkey’s Ministry of Health regulates bariatric surgery through its Regulation on Obesity Units and Obesity Surgery Units: surgery may only take place in an authorised unit, by a general surgeon holding a ministerial obesity-surgery certificate, in a hospital with an adult intensive care unit and a multidisciplinary team. Membership of a professional society is not the same as this authorisation, so ask for the unit licence and the surgeon’s certificate. And the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) advises that care should stay with the operating centre for at least two years, with annual specialist reviews for life, and that UK GPs are not expected to provide routine follow-up for private surgery in the first two years. Whoever operates on you has to be reachable for that long.
Whatever country you pick, these are the questions that separate a good decision from a gamble:
- Who exactly will perform my surgery, and can I speak to that surgeon before I pay?
- How many sleeves did that surgeon do last year, and what is the leak rate?
- Which hospital, which accreditation body, and is there an adult ICU on site?
- In Turkey: is the unit authorised by the Ministry of Health, and does the surgeon hold the ministerial obesity-surgery certificate?
- What happens at 2 a.m. on my third night if I have pain or a fever?
- Who follows me after I fly home, for how long, and how do I reach them?
- Is the quote in writing, and what is the policy if a revision is needed?
- Can I verify the surgeon on a registry the clinic does not control?
