Why Winnipeg Residents Choose Mexico for Bariatric Surgery

Manitoba's public bariatric program is limited to one center — the Winnipeg Bariatric Program — with strict eligibility and years-long waits. Private options in Winnipeg are scarce and cost $18,000–$25,000 CAD.

Choosing bariatric surgery in Mexico means immediate access to board-certified surgeons, US-standard hospitals, and all-inclusive pricing — often 70% less than private Winnipeg options.

✓ Medical-grade equipment
✓ 12-month follow-up included
✓ Coordinator support in English
✓ Airport pickup + hotel

Manitoba Health coverage

What Manitoba Health covers, who qualifies, and how long it takes

Bariatric surgery is publicly funded in Manitoba, but through a single program, only with a referral, and with no published wait time. Here is the official picture, with sources.

Where it is done

The WRHA Centre for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg is the only funded program in the province for gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. It is open to adults who live in Manitoba and meet its criteria. You cannot self-refer: a family physician, primary care provider or specialist sends the referral.

Who qualifies (WRHA criteria)

  • Age 18–70, resident of Manitoba
  • BMI 35–65, or BMI 30–35 with obesity-related comorbidities (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, fatty liver disease)
  • Unsuccessful attempts with structured diet and exercise
  • Non-smoker (smoke-free for at least 6 months), no untreated psychiatric disorder or substance use

Exclusions include immobility, ischemic heart disease, pulmonary hypertension and inability to follow the program.

How long it takes

Neither the WRHA nor Manitoba Health publishes a bariatric surgery wait time. With one program serving the whole province, patients move through referral, orientation, dietitian and psychology assessments and then the surgical list, a pathway measured in years rather than months. Your referring doctor can ask the program for the current estimate.

What Manitoba Health will not pay

Private surgery in Canada or abroad. Care you need back home afterwards, including emergency visits, is covered like any other resident’s. Part of what you pay in Mexico can come back through the CRA medical expense tax credit.

FAQs for Manitoba Patients

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Manitoba Health cover bariatric surgery in Mexico?
No — Manitoba Health does not cover out-of-country elective surgery. However, ALO all-inclusive pricing (from $6,200 CAD) is often 70% less than private Winnipeg options. Many Manitoba patients use HSA/FSA funds or medical financing (e.g. iFinance Canada, Medicard).
How do I get from Winnipeg to Tijuana?
Fly from Winnipeg YWG to San Diego SAN with a connection in Denver (DEN) or Minneapolis (MSP) — total ~6–8 hours. Our coordinator picks you up at San Diego and handles the 20–30 minute border crossing to Tijuana. Round-trip flights typically $550–850 CAD.
Is bariatric surgery in Mexico safe?
Yes — when performed by board-certified surgeons at accredited hospitals. ALO surgeons hold FACS, ASMBS, IFSO, and CMCOEM certifications. Our hospitals use medical-grade equipment matching US standards. Complication rates match top Canadian/US bariatric centers.
What if I need follow-up back in Manitoba?
You get 12-month follow-up included — video consults, nutrition support, medication adjustments. We provide detailed surgical notes for your Winnipeg family doctor. Most Manitoba patients report seamless coordination with their local healthcare providers.
What is included in the $6,200 CAD all-inclusive price?
Surgeon fees, board-certified anesthesiologist, hospital stay (1–2 nights), all pre-op labs, medications, San Diego airport pickup, border transfer, hotel stay (2–3 nights), all meals, English-speaking coordinator, and 12-month follow-up. Not included: your flight and personal spending.
How soon can I book my surgery?
Typical timeline from first consultation to surgery is 2–4 weeks — compared to 2–4 years on Manitoba Health waitlist. Most Manitoba patients choose dates 3–6 weeks out to arrange time off work.
What are the criteria for bariatric surgery through Manitoba Health?
The WRHA Centre for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery takes Manitoba residents aged 18–70 with BMI 35–65, or BMI 30–35 with obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea, who have tried structured diet and exercise, are smoke-free for at least six months and have no untreated psychiatric or substance-use disorder. A referral from a physician or specialist is required.
How long is the wait for bariatric surgery in Manitoba?
Neither the WRHA nor Manitoba Health publishes a bariatric-specific wait time. The Victoria Hospital program is the only funded one in the province, and the pathway runs from referral through orientation and team assessments before you reach the surgical list, so plan on years rather than months. Your referring doctor can ask the program for the current estimate.
I am BMI 30 to 34. Can I qualify with ALO?
Yes, with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension, PCOS or joint disease; from BMI 35 no condition is needed. Age range is 18–70. Check in 2 minutes.
Do I need a referral from my Manitoba doctor to book with ALO?
No. You start with our online questionnaire and Dr. López’s team reviews your history directly; pre-op labs are done at the hospital and included. Keep your family doctor informed: routine visits and blood work after you return are covered by Manitoba Health as usual.
