With over 7,000 surgeries and patients from places like the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, England and Australia, ALO Bariatric is celebrating its 10th anniversary!

Obesity is a global pandemic in today’s world. Over 70 million adults in the U.S. alone suffer from this condition now. During the last 15 years, the prevalence of obesity increased from 30.5% to 42.4% among adults. The fact that the explosion of this serious, yet common, disease is very recent makes it so challenging to come across truly physicians committed to eradicating it, but Dr. Alejandro López and ALO Bariatrics have been pioneers in the fight against it.

ALO’s story started back in the 90s when Dr. López was only a med student. It was around this time that doctors started to catch how obesity resulted in chronic diseases, diabetes and high-blood pressure studies were in their early stages. A professor invited Dr. López to study an exciting alternative to fight obesity, this collaboration resulted in the first clinical trials in the U.S. and Mexico for the gastric band. As new solutions started to arise, there was a city in the spotlight of the movement: Tijuana, Mexico. The first FDA-approved clinical trials took place in Tijuana, today it is one of the world’s most important medical tourism destinations. Ever since that time, Dr. López would share his time between Guadalajara and Tijuana.

Additionally, during that time international medical associations like the IFSO started. The Congreso Mexicano de la Bariatría was founded and the investigations for ByPass and Duodenal Switch were consolidated. At the end of the decade, the laparoscopic surgeries, a method Dr. López started with, were a reality.

Without a doubt, Dr. Alejandro López is the precursor of bariatric medicine in Mexico and has served all his patients faithfully. To continue his mission, he founded ALO Bariatrics to help more people have access to first-grade medical surgeries at cost-conscious prices. Today, ALO Bariatrics has operations in Tijuana, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta and its unique and integral approach continue with the same enthusiasm helping people transform their lives.
