What AHCIP covers, who qualifies, and how long it takes
Bariatric surgery is publicly funded in Alberta, but only through the AHS bariatric clinics, only with a referral, and only after a multi-year wait. Here is the official picture, with sources.
Where it is done
Five AHS Bariatric Specialty Clinics: Edmonton (Adult Bariatric Surgery Clinic, Royal Alexandra Hospital), Calgary (Adult Bariatric Surgery Clinic, Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre) and Red Deer do surgery; Grande Prairie and Medicine Hat also run medical weight management. You cannot self-refer: a physician or nurse practitioner sends the referral, and the clinic gives you an estimated wait when it books you.
Who qualifies (Royal Alexandra clinic)
- Alberta resident, non-smoker
- Age 17–64 at the time of referral
- BMI 35+ with an obesity-related comorbidity, or BMI 40+
- No severe untreated psychiatric illness, active psychosis, active substance dependence or major cognitive impairment
Criteria vary slightly by clinic: Medicine Hat lists BMI 35+ with or without a comorbidity, ages 18–64, and six months nicotine-free at referral.
How long it takes
Alberta publishes no bariatric-specific wait time. In October 2023 an AHS bariatric surgeon told CBC News it is “at least three years probably… from the time that you’re referred by your family physician… until you actually have surgery”, longer for some patients, with 950 people on the list, most of them in the Edmonton zone.
What AHCIP will not pay
Private surgery, whether in a Canadian private clinic or abroad. Care you need back in Alberta afterwards, including emergency visits, is covered like any other resident’s. Part of what you pay in Mexico can come back through the CRA medical expense tax credit.
