Gastric Sleeve vs. Gastric Bypass

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Both sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass are effective weight loss procedures. Here is how they differ:
Gastric Sleeve Revision
GASTRIC SLEEVE
Gastric sleeve surgery (or sleeve gastrectomy) is a procedure that surgically removes about 80 percent of your stomach. By removing part of your stomach, you will feel fuller after a smaller amount of food, leading to weight loss. It is called a gastric sleeve because, after the removal, your stomach is approximately the size of a banana and looks like a sleeve. To be a good candidate, patients should have a BMI of 35 or greater.
Gastric Bypass Revision
GASTRIC BYPASS
Gastric bypass divides your stomach into a small section and a large section. The surgeon then redirects your digestive tract by connecting the lower portion of the small intestine to the smaller portion of your stomach. This process limits the amount of food you can consume and the number of calories you can absorb, resulting in rapid weight loss.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

WHAT TO EXPECT THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS

Dr. Lopez has helped thousands of patients reach their weight loss goals and would love to help you achieve your own. The first step is to contact our Guadalajara, Mexico, location to set up a free telephone consultation. If we determine that you are a good candidate for the gastric sleeve procedure, this is what you can expect on the day of surgery:
SMALL INCISIONS
Our doctors in Guadalajara will make five small incisions to your abdomen to perform your sleeve gastrectomy. A laparoscope (a probe with a camera on the end that sends pictures to the monitor) will be inserted, allowing the doctor to navigate.
CREATING THE SLEEVE
Through these small incisions, our Guadalajara surgeon will remove around 80 percent of your stomach. The remaining pouch will resemble a sleeve and only hold around 150 ml of food.
STAPLE LINE REINFORCEMENT
To ensure the success of your sleeve gastrectomy in Guadalajara, your surgeon will seal the stomach using the staple line reinforcement technique. This involves using non-absorbable sutures to support the staple line, reducing the risk of leaks by up to 99 percent. After this reinforcement, we will complete three tests to ensure there are no leaks.

Am I a Candidate

FOR GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY?

Before your procedure in Guadalajara, you will need to consult with a surgeon to ensure you are a good candidate for this type of bariatric surgery. Your candidacy will primarily depend on:

BMI

To qualify for gastric sleeve surgery, you need to have a BMI of 35 or greater or have a BMI of 30 with an obesity-related disease, like diabetes.

Age

It is typically recommended that patients undergoing the gastric sleeve procedure be at least 18 and no older than 65.

Little or No Success Using Other Options

Any type of bariatric surgery should only be considered after all other non-invasive methods, such as lifestyle changes, have been unsuccessful. Altering your diet and increasing your amount of exercise should be seriously attempted before undergoing gastric sleeve surgery.

Commitment to Weight Loss

You must be committed to following your doctor’s lifestyle change recommendations following surgery. Without proper lifestyle changes following gastric sleeve surgery, you risk gaining the weight back over time. Sleeve gastrectomy alone can’t achieve the results you need – you must be ready and willing to eat a healthier diet and remain active on a regular basis.

Is It Time

TO CONSIDER GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY?

If you think you are a good candidate for gastric sleeve, contact us to explore the possibility of undergoing this procedure in Guadalajara. You will first be sent a health and medical history questionnaire to complete. Once filled out, our surgeon will review your answers and determine if you would be a good candidate for gastric sleeve.

This entire process is completely free and conducted by our bilingual staff to accommodate all our patients. If you are deemed a good candidate, we can begin to schedule your surgery. Contact us using the form above to schedule your consultation.

SILS

A LESS INVASIVE GASTRIC SLEEVE TECHNIQUE

An added benefit to choosing Guadalajara as your gastric sleeve surgery destination is that Dr. Lopez can perform single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS). This variation on the traditional gastric sleeve procedure is performed using a single incision in the belly button rather than five small incisions across your abdomen.
Minimal Scarring
During SILS, Dr. Lopez will make a small incision in your belly button. This makes the scar virtually invisible once completed. With no visible scars, you can be confident while wearing any type of clothing.
Rapid Recovery
With only one incision, the recovery after SILS is much quicker than the traditional gastric sleeve procedure. Having one incision to care for instead of five means less discomfort and pain post-operation.

FAQ

Are There Any Risks?

Every surgery comes with risks, which is why it is important to choose an experienced doctor at an accredited facility. Some of the risks associated with gastric sleeve surgery include infection, increased chance of hernia, or leaking at the staple line. Our team takes every precaution to ensure these more severe complications do not occur.

How Long Is Recovery?

Your exterior incisions will only take about two weeks to fully heal. Your stomach, however, will take about 6-8 weeks. You should start feeling less tired and more like yourself at around three weeks. After that time, you can start to get back into your daily routines.

How Much Weight Do People Typically Lose?

Most patients will lose about 60 percent of their weight over the first year to 18 months. If you were 100 pounds overweight before your surgery, you can expect to have lost around 60 pounds within your first year. Exercising and maintaining a healthy diet will aid your weight loss.

Is it Reversible?

Sleeve gastrectomy is not reversible. Patients who choose to have this procedure need to be committed to long-term lifestyle changes in order for the benefits of the surgery to last.

“We were fortunate enough to book bariatric gastric sleeve surgery with Alo. Sandra was an excellent coordinator and she really cares about the patients. The whole staff was top notch. Do yourself a favor and don’t look anywhere else if you need bariatric surgery.”
