About Gastric Bypass Surgery (aka Roux-en-Y)
Day of Procedure
...you will be asleep and pain free during the procedure.
Four Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Start Losing Weight?
Since your stomach is now smaller, you will feel fuller much faster when you eat. This helps the weight loss process. The Roux-en-Y procedure also decreases the calories that your small intestine absorbs, another important weight loss factor.
How Much Weight Will I Lose?
Every bariatric surgery patient responds differentially, as factors like lifestyle habits and the type of weight loss surgery you had can affect your long-term weight loss. On average, severely obese gastric bypass patients can lose half their body weight or more over a two-year period.
Where Were Our Surgeons Trained?
Our board-certified bariatric surgeons have received specialized training at the most prestigious medical schools and hospitals in Mexico as well as the United States, including the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition and Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
What Is Recovery Like?
You will be monitored closely during your two to three day hospital stay and will have follow-up appointments at our offices in Tijuana, Puerto Vallarta, or Guadalajara before you are cleared to go home. You'll be given prescription medications for pain. Most patients are completely healed and pain-free in three to five weeks.

Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Sleeve
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is another effective weight loss surgery option that may be recommended. Both gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery reduce the size of your stomach to provide dramatic weight loss results for obese patients, but the surgeries themselves have some important differences:
- Unlike gastric bypass, gastric sleeve surgery does not involve attaching your small intestine to a stomach pouch.
- Instead, about 80 percent of your stomach is removed laparoscopically, leaving a gastric sleeve about the size and shape of a banana. The gastric sleeve holds much less food than your full-sized stomach, resulting in dramatic, long-term weight loss.
- During your consultation, your surgeon can discuss if a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass is the best option for you.
