What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery, known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, is a bariatric procedure designed to help patients safely achieve weight loss and improved health. Using minimally invasive techniques, our bariatric surgeons will reduce the size of your stomach to prevent overeating. This also decreases the number of calories your body absorbs with each meal. The primary difference between Roux-en-Y and gastric sleeve is that gastric sleeve surgery involves permanently removing 80% of the stomach; Roux-en-Y divides the stomach into a small pouch that holds an ounce of food, while the remainder of the stomach stays intact to produce digestive fluids. Your surgeon can determine whether gastric sleeve, Roux-en-Y, or another procedure is right for you.
Gastric bypass surgery involves reducing stomach capacity and rerouting the small intestine to limit overeating and decrease the number of calories the body absorbs.

Candidates for Gastric Bypass

Every bariatric surgery (including gastric bypass and gastric sleeve) has certain candidacy requirements that patients must meet in order to ensure a safe and beneficial treatment. In order to determine if you qualify for surgical weight loss, your doctor will consider:

Body Mass Index (BMI)

To qualify, patients should have a BMI of over 40. If you have a chronic disease, such as type 2 diabetes, you must have a BMI of over 35 to qualify for treatment.

Failed Attempts to Lose Weight

Before undergoing bariatric surgery, patients should make an attempt to lose weight through proper nutrition and regular exercise. If these techniques have failed to provide weight loss, bariatric surgery may be right for you.

Commitment to Change

The hard work doesn't end once you leave Tijuana. After weight loss surgery, patients should commit to a healthy diet and exercise routine in order to lose weight, keep the weight off, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The Process of Gastric Bypass Surgery

Our bariatric surgeons perform, on average, eight bypass surgeries a week.
Our bariatric surgeons perform, on average, eight bypass surgeries a week.

Consultation

The process of your weight loss journey starts with a free consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons. We offer free phone consultations, so you don't have to come into our office until your surgery is scheduled.

Anesthesia

On the day of your surgery, general anesthesia will be administered to you by a certified anesthesiologist. Anesthesia ensures that you're unconscious during the entire process for a virtually painless treatment.

Creating Incisions

Our bariatric surgeons use a minimally invasive surgical technique involving an abdominal incision that is less than a centimeter long.

Stomach Operation

For the first part of the surgery, the doctor will focus on dividing your stomach into large and small sections. The stomach pouch, which is about the size of a walnut, is closed and reinforced with staples. While a normal stomach holds around three pints of food, your new stomach pouch will hold about one ounce. These changes are made using small, highly articulate surgical tools. A laparoscope, which is a small camera on the end of a flexible tube, will give the surgeon a high-definition view of the surgical site.

Small Intestine Operation

Next, your small intestine is attached to the stomach pouch. Food will bypass the larger portion of your stomach, going directly from your stomach pouch to your small intestine for digestion. The smaller portion of the stomach is also attached to a lower part of the small intestine so it can continue to provide digestive fluids. The incisions are closed after these changes are complete.

Recovery

Gastric bypass is an in-patient procedure, so you'll be closely monitored by our staff for a day or two before you return to your hotel room.

Healing From Gastric Bypass

Take Medication

Prescription pain medication is included in your surgical fees to keep any post-surgery pain and discomfort under control. Discomfort is a normal side effect we will help you manage.

Rest and Heal

Rest following surgery is highly important for an efficient recovery. That's why we include your hotel stay in the overall cost of your visit. Relax at the Tijuana Marriott and avoid strenuous activities.

Walk Regularly

To avoid blood clots and promote good circulation, patients should walk a little each day. Avoid heavy lifting and high-intensity exercise, but continue to move around and walk little by little.

Take Time Away From Work

Thanks to our minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, many patients can return to work after only two to four weeks. However, if your job relies on physical labor, you may need to take additional time off.

Gastric Bypass FAQ

How Much Weight Will I Lose?

The amount of weight you lose depends on your lifestyle habits after your surgery. On average, gastric bypass patients lose around 70% of their excess weight.

How Long is Recovery?

Recovery varies for each patient, but typically you'll start to have more energy at around the three-week mark and your stomach will heal after six to eight weeks.

Will I Have Scarring?

Thanks to our minimally invasive technique, minimal scarring is present following gastric bypass surgery. The incisions we make are less than a centimeter in length.

How Much Food Can My Stomach Hold Post-Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery reduces the size of your stomach to hold about one ounce of food. A normal stomach can hold about three pints.

Are There Risks?

Any surgery will come with a set of risks. Our board-certified surgeons operate out of certified hospitals and use state-of-the-art techniques and technology to perform surgeries in the utmost safety.

"I'm down 155 pounds in 6 months."

"My results are more than I imagined was possible. I'm down 155 pounds in 6 months. I went to an annual screening that my employer requires and the numbers were the best in 30 years. The staff was professional and efficient 6 months ago as well. My biggest regret is that I waited so long to get the surgery!" David Alexander, 2021

Other Weight Loss Surgeries

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass isn't your only weight loss surgery option. Depending on your unique factors, another form of bariatric surgery may be ideal for you. During your free consultation, our doctors can help you discover which surgery fits your needs. ALO Bariatrics offers gastric bypass surgery as well as:

Gastric Sleeve

The gastric sleeve procedure, otherwise known as a sleeve gastrectomy, is similar to gastric bypass since it reduces the size of the stomach. However, a gastric sleeve surgery permanently removes part of the stomach instead of simply dividing it.

Explore Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Duodenal Switch

The duodenal switch procedure is a combination of the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass procedures. The stomach is reduced with a gastric sleeve surgery and connected directly to the lower third of the small intestine.

Lap-Band

Lap-Band surgery is the only reversible option among bariatric surgeries. It involves placing an adjustable silicone ring around the stomach to reduce its capacity. If it is unsuccessful, this surgery can be converted to a sleeve gastrectomy or other bariatric surgery.
