Single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) is a modern take on the duodenal switch (biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) procedure.
Duodenal switch procedures start with a sleeve gastrectomy, the removal of 80% of the stomach. The surgeon then reroutes the intestines to shorten the path your food takes.
SADI-S is a similar procedure. It starts with a sleeve gastrectomy, then the new stomach sleeve is sewn to a loop of the small intestine to bypass most of the bowel.
The main difference between the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch and SADI-S procedures is the single anastomosis (reconnection within the gastrointestinal tract). While duodenal switch requires two, SADI-S requires just one.
