What OHIP Covers — and What It Does Not
OHIP covers gastric sleeve and gastric bypass for patients who meet medical criteria: BMI 30 to 34.9 with adiposity-related comorbidities, or BMI 35 and above with or without them (the Ontario Bariatric Network criteria in force since April 23, 2026; before that date the bar was BMI 35 with a comorbidity or BMI 40). The patient must complete a structured pre-op program at one of Ontario’s designated Bariatric Centres of Excellence.
OHIP does NOT cover duodenal switch, SADI-S, or balón gástrico routinely. Revision surgery is covered case-by-case. Out-of-province or out-of-country surgery is not covered except for emergencies. The Ontario Bariatric Network coordinates referrals and pre-op programs.

Common Mistakes Ontarians Make
Assuming OHIP “is enough” with comorbidities worsening. If diabetes is worsening or apnea damaging your heart, waiting 4 years is a real medical risk.
Not enrolling in pre-op program promptly. The pre-op program itself takes 6–12 months. Get on the list ASAP if you are considering bariatric surgery.
Picking Mexican clinics by price alone. Low prices often exclude hospital, anesthesia or follow-up. Verify accreditation, surgeon credentials, complication rates.
