ABOUT MEDICAL TOURISM IN MEXICO

“I can honestly say I had a great experience, from getting picked up until the day I left. Eduardo our driver was very nice and friendly I’m very grateful. The hotel we stayed at was nice and clean and the staff were helpful, courteous and friendly. The day of the surgery got to the hospital was very clean and nice. Yes you can tell they are doing some remodeling outside but the inside was very clean and nice. Everyone I met at the hospital were nice and friendly as well. I met Dr. Alejandro he was very nice. Every Dr. I met and had a conversation with were very helpful and very nice people. Even after the surgery the nurses and staff were always very attentive at all times. I would lie if I said I had a bad experience due to it being the whole opposite of that. I would definitely recommend Dr. Alejandro for this procedure. I thank the nurses, drivers, staff, and anyone else who I did not mention. Thank you so much for your hospitality and for taking care of us the way y’all did God bless!”

About Gastric Bypass Surgery

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is one of the best-known surgical weight loss options.

During gastric bypass surgery, a patient’s stomach is divided into two parts. The first part is a small stomach pouch that food will pass through. The lower portion of the small intestine is rerouted to connect to this smaller stomach pouch. The second part of the stomach is rerouted to connect to the small intestine so bile and pancreatic fluid can aid in digestion.

HOW IT MAKES WEIGHT LOSS HAPPEN

Gastric bypass surgery results in a combination of restrictive and malabsorptive weight loss.

Thanks to the smaller stomach pouch, a patient’s food intake is restricted. That means less food and fewer calories can be consumed during a meal. And since part of the small intestine is bypassed, the patient also absorbs fewer calories when their food is digested.

How Much Weight Will I Lose

FROM GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY?

While weight loss can vary based on the patient’s degree of obesity, most gastric bypass patients can expect to lose around 70 percent of their excess weight. In addition to shedding pounds, patients will often find relief from weight-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), sleep apnea, joint pain, and an increased risk of heart disease.

Gastric Bypass Candidacy

Gastric bypass surgery can help people with obesity or morbid obesity. There are a few key things our bariatric surgeons look for when determining if it’s a good surgery for you:

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Most gastric bypass surgery patients have a BMI of 40 or over. In addition, these patients are typically at least 100 pounds over their ideal weight.

Limited Success with Previous Weight Loss

If you have struggled to lose weight and keep it off through diet and exercise, weight loss surgery may be your best option to achieve your health goals.

Obesity Comorbidities

A person with a BMI of 35 or over may be a candidate for gastric bypass if obesity comorbidities are present, such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure.

Distal Bypass Surgery:

A Gastric Bypass Variation

In addition to standard Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, there is a variation known as distal bypass surgery.

A distal bypass still involves the creation of a smaller stomach pouch and rerouting of the intestine. The difference is that even more of the small intestine is bypassed during the procedure, further reducing calorie absorption during digestion.

REASON FOR A DISTAL BYPASS

Distal bypass surgery is often performed as a revision procedure for gastric bypass patients who regain some weight. We can discuss the distal version of the procedure in more detail during your consultation at ALO Bariatrics.

The Gastric Bypass Procedure

In general, these are the steps you can expect during the gastric bypass procedure performed by our accredited bariatric surgeons in Puerto Vallarta:

GENERAL ANESTHESIA

Our certified anesthesiologists will administer general anesthesia to ensure your comfort during the surgical process.

ABDOMINAL INCISIONS

Small incisions are made on the abdomen. We use laparoscopic instruments to limit scarring and reduce the risk of complications. Basically, the laparoscopic approach means using a special camera (called a laparoscope) and small, incredibly articulate tools to make the necessary alterations with minimal tissue disruption.

CREATING THE STOMACH POUCH

Using a laparoscope and special surgical instruments, your bariatric surgeon will create a small stomach pouch that is separate from the larger stomach pouch.

ADJUSTING THE SMALL INTESTINE

The lower portion of the small intestine is rerouted to connect to the smaller stomach pouch. The second stomach pouch is also rerouted so it can deliver digestive fluids to the lower portion of the small intestine.

COMPLETING THE SURGERY

Once the small intestine is rerouted, our surgeons will ensure that incisions are sutured shut. You will be closely monitored in the hospital overnight before being discharged.

Healing from Gastric Bypass Surgery

POSTSURGICAL RECOVERY INFORMATION

Initial Monitoring

Following surgery, gastric bypass patients will be monitored at Hospital San Javier Rivera. This helps ensure there are no complications immediately after the procedure, such as gastric leakage from the small intestine or stomach pouch.

Recuperation in Hotel

After the brief hospital stay, patients will return to Paradise Village Hotel to rest. Some follow-up visits may be scheduled during this time, but your primary focus is avoiding strenuous activities and stress in order to give your body a chance to heal.

Returning to Work

Since laparoscopic surgery is less invasive, many gastric bypass patients can return to sedentary work after two to four weeks. Please note that it will take more time to return to jobs that involve heavy lifting or that are physically demanding.

Resuming Daily Activities

After gastric bypass surgery, patients should walk a little each day to promote circulation and avoid blood clots. Gradually, patients will be able to engage in low-impact aerobics, with a full return to normal activities once the recovery process is complete.

Post-Op Diet Guide

WHAT TO EAT AFTER GASTRIC BYPASS

After surgery, patients will have a restricted diet to help with recovery, ensure comfort, and promote weight loss.

Another Glowing Review

FROM A PATIENT AT OUR PUERTO VALLARTA FACILITY

“Very thorough communication, transportation from and to airport was provided. I went to PV for surgery, hotel was convenient to everything you could need. Dr was top notch, as well as the whole staff I came into contact with. I’m 3 years post op and still have a line of communication when needed. Still responsive. The hospital is so clean I would eat off the floor. I couldn’t recommend this more highly than I do. And if you are nervous, reach out to them! They will answer all of your questions! I’d do it all over again!”

Scarring After Gastric Bypass Surgery

There is minimal scarring after a gastric bypass thanks to the use of less invasive laparoscopic techniques. The incisions are small and hard to notice. In fact, many patients can wear bathing suits and outfits that expose their midriff without any noticeable scarring.

By following your postoperative instructions, you can ensure that the scars from these small incisions will fade significantly.

Maintaining Your Weight Loss Results

Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

A nutritious and well-balanced diet is the cornerstone of long-term weight loss results. In addition to picking a good variety of healthy foods, be sure to chew thoroughly and savor your meals to avoid overeating.

Use Supplements as Directed

Malabsorption during digestion can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Gastric bypass patients can take vitamins and other nutritional supplements to address these potential nutritional deficiencies.

Exercise and Keep Active

In addition to a good diet, you can maintain a healthy body weight by exercising regularly and staying active each day. Consider creating a sustainable workout routine that will work for you.

Make Sure to Stay Hydrated

Drinking water between meals has two key benefits for weight maintenance. First, hydration ensures your body works efficiently. Second, hydrating can help control hunger and prevent snacking between meals.

Emotional Support for Your Journey

Speak with your friends and family about your feelings during this time. You can also consult with mental health professionals to address the changes you’re going through.

Other Bariatric Procedures

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or distal bypass surgery are not your only surgical weight loss options. There are other laparoscopic procedures that can help you achieve safe and fast weight loss. Below are three common alternatives to gastric bypass:

Gastric Sleeve

Also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, the gastric sleeve procedure involves permanently reducing the size of the stomach to a pouch about the size of a banana. This restricts calorie consumption and helps reduce sensations of hunger.

Gastric Bypass

This procedure combines a gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery. A duodenal switch reduces the size of the stomach to reduce calorie consumption while also bypassing a portion of the intestine to reduce the number of calories absorbed during the digestion process.

Duodenal Switch

Also known as gastric banding, Lap-Band involves the use of an adjustable silicone ring to reduce the size of the stomach. Gastric bands are completely reversible and can be converted into other bariatric procedures as needed.
