Gastric Sleeve by Single Incision
What is gastric sleeve by Single Incision?
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy also known as a Gastric sleeve can be done by a Single incision. It is a minimally invasive technique performed by a laparoscopic approach. Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery is also known as (SILS).
The surgery is performed through one incision approximately one and a half inches wide in the umbilical, it is hidden inside the belly button, so it is hard to notice.
ALO Bariatrics surgeons’ expertise and the advancement in medical devices have made it possible to perform laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery with just one small incision.
ALO Bariatrics®, has been doing Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) since 2012, making our team one of the most experienced on the field.
Single incision gastric sleeve technique takes a longer time to complete as it is more difficult than traditional laparoscopic surgery, as the visibility and medical instruments come through only one spot.
The incisions of these photos are a few months after surgery.
How does Single Incision Gastric sleeve Work?
On the inside it is basically the same surgery as a normal gastric sleeve, the only difference lies in the 5 small incisions that are done normally compared to only one incision hidden in the belly button.
During the gastric sleeve, 70% to 80% of the stomach is removed, the hunger hormone production is reduced as it is produced mainly on the greater curvature of the stomach, part of the stomach that is removed.
How is recovery after Single incision gastric sleeve?
Recovery is the same as the traditional laparoscopic technique. The patient needs to start walking around as soon as he fully recovers from the anesthesia and the risk of falling down is gone, you can resume normal activities after hospital discharge, with the exception of strong abdominal efforts and no lifting more than 25 lbs for 6 weeks. Of course, follow the post-op diet directed by ALO Bariatrics nutritional guidelines.
What are the direct advantages of Single-Incision Gastric Sleeve?
It still is a minimally invasive procedure and it is mucho more aesthetically pleasing for patients who want less scars.
Who are the Candidates for Single incision gastric sleeve:
— Your BMI must be lower than 40 because a higher BMI comes with increased abdominal pressure and the amount of fat tissue reduces the visibility for a SILS approach.
— No history of previous bariatric surgery as the internal scarring that it causes makes a SILS impossible to perform.
