Gastric Ballon Surgery FAQ’s – Answers To Your Frequently Asked Questions
Gastric balloon surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that helps with weight loss.
Specifically, it involves the insertion of a small, deflated silicone balloon into the stomach through the mouth. The balloon is then inflated with air or liquid, causing the patient to feel fuller, faster.
The procedure is safe and reversible, involving no incisions and minimal recovery time.
1. Who Is the Procedure Appropriate For?
Usually, bariatric surgical procedures are only recommended for people with a BMI above 40. However, since gastric balloon surgery is unique, it is appropriate for people with a much lower BMI. If you have a BMI above 27, you may qualify for gastric balloon surgery.
2. Is Gastric Balloon Surgery Safe?
Compared to other procedures, one of the main benefits of gastric balloon surgery is that it involves no incisions. That means no one will have to cut into your body, which allows for substantially less pain and recovery time. In fact, you are unlikely to feel anything throughout the procedure.
Using small, flexible instruments, the balloon will be inserted and inflated.
Upon insertion of the balloon, an anesthetic spray will be used to numb your throat. You will remain under mild sedation for about 20 or 30 minutes until the procedure is complete. Then, you can go home after at least 3 hours, though an overnight stay is recommended.
3. What Are the Expected Results for Gastric Ballon?
The balloon will stay inside your body for six months. During that time, you can expect to lose 7 to 15% of your body weight, on average. Once the balloon is removed, weight loss usually continues until a total of 30 to 47% of total body weight is lost.
The following conditions can also be improved or reversed as a result of the weight loss:
— Gastroesophageal reflux disease
— Heart disease
— High blood pressure
— Obstructive sleep apnea
— Osteoarthritis (joint pain)
— Type 2 diabetes
— High cholesterol
— Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
However, as with any weight loss procedure, it is possible to gain the weight back if lifestyle adjustments are not made.
