What Is a Gastric Sleeve?

Also known as sleeve gastrectomy and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), gastric sleeve surgery involves the removal of part of a patient’s stomach. The resized stomach pouch is now only the size of a banana. That means patients will eat fewer calories with each meal.

SILS: Results With One Hidden Incision

SILS stands for “single-incision laparoscopic surgery.” Most laparoscopic weight loss surgeries require multiple incisions on the abdomen. With SILS, a gastric sleeve surgery can be performed through just one incision that’s tucked away in the belly button.

How Much Weight Will I Lose?

/

Within a year of getting a sleeve gastrectomy, many patients lose more than 50 percent of their excess body weight. In addition to the significant weight loss, sleeve gastrectomy also helps treat obesity comorbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.

Candidates for Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Body Mass Index (BMI)
Gastric sleeve surgery is recommended for people with a BMI of 35 or higher. It can also be performed on people with a BMI of 30 or greater who experience obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and cardiovascular disease.
Previous Weight Loss Attempts
Bariatric surgery is helpful for people who have achieved limited success with non-surgical weight loss methods for at least a year. In such cases, a sleeve gastrectomy would help the person achieve lasting weight loss and long-term benefits to general health and wellness.
Free From Acid Reflux
Changing the size of the stomach can exacerbate acid reflux symptoms. To ensure a patient’s long-term post-operative well-being, we make sure candidates for surgery do not have a history of this condition. We can always recommend a different procedure if needed.
Free From Esophageal Diseases
Gastric sleeve can also exacerbate the symptoms of various esophageal conditions, including Barrett’s esophagus. We will note potential risks of post-op complications due to existing health issues during the consultation process. We will then recommend sensible alternatives.

I highly recommend the team at ALO Bariatrics. Sandra is amazing at providing details and ensuring you are their #1 priority. Dr Lopez is a gifted surgeon with vast experience in bariatric procedures. The Tijuana facilities are clean, safe, well staffed and dedicated to protecting the patients’ dignity and care. If you are thinking about weight loss surgery as a health or cosmetic option, ALO should be your choice.

Here’s what patients can expect during the surgical process.

We can review the procedure in greater detail during your consultation with ALO Bariatrics.

Your Recovery Timeline

FOLLOWING REVISION BARIATRIC SURGERY

Following your surgeon’s post-operation instructions will be crucial in promoting and maintaining weight loss and reducing your chance of complications. Your recovery timeline will largely depend on which revision procedure you choose to undergo, but the following is a general breakdown of what you can expect:

Abdominal Incisions
Five small incisions are made in different parts of the abdomen. Laparoscopic instruments and cameras are inserted through these incisions to perform the operation. If the SILS method is used, a single incision will be made in the belly button.
CREATING THE SLEEVE
The stomach is divided into two sections. Approximately 70 to 80% of the stomach will be removed during this part of the procedure, greatly altering the patient’s total stomach capacity.
COMPLETING THE PROCEDURE
With the remaining portion of the stomach reduced to the size of a banana, the bariatric surgeon will then seal the smaller stomach pouch. All care is taken to prevent gastric leaks and reduce the risk of complications after surgery.

Healing and Surgical Recovery

Gastric sleeve patients should follow all post-op instructions closely in order to heal quickly, manage side effects, and prevent complications. We can provide more detailed information on the healing process during your consultation.
Initial Monitoring
Patients will be monitored at Hospital San Javier Rivera to ensure the procedure was successful and that there are no signs of gastric leaks or other potentially life-threatening complications.
Recuperation in Hotel
After leaving the hospital, patients will get to recover from the comfort of the Paradise Village Hotel. During this time, patients should focus on rest and avoid strenuous physical activities.
Returning to Work
Most gastric sleeve patients are able to go back to work a week to two weeks after surgery. Situations vary, and more time off may be needed for people in physically demanding professions.
Resuming Normal Activities
Patients should walk a little each day in order to promote circulation. Low-impact aerobics can be resumed one month after surgery. Other exercises can be resumed in the following weeks.
The Months Ahead
Patients will experience significant weight loss in the coming weeks and months. Be sure to follow all diet and nutrition recommendations, and to continue noting post-op instructions.

The Post-Op Recovery Diet

Bariatric surgery patients will slowly introduce solid foods back into their diet in the weeks after their procedure. Here’s a sample of what foods a patient can eat after a sleeve gastrectomy.
FIRST WEEK POST-SURGERY
  • Clear liquids
  • Broths
  • Sugar-free juice
  • Sugar-free gelatin
SECOND WEEK POST-SURGERY
  • Thin creamed soups without chunks
  • Fat-free milk
  • Protein shakes
  • Non-fat pudding

THIRD WEEK POST-SURGERY
  • Cottage cheese
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Hummus
  • Greek yogurt
FOURTH WEEK POST-SURGERY
  • Well-cooked vegetables

Patients Love What We Can Achieve

I had my gastric sleeve May 5, 2014. I’ve lost 95 pounds and couldn’t be happier! Thank you so much, Dr. López! You’re an amazing doctor! I had a great experience and am so glad I chose you!

– Jessica Jalovec

Will I Have Visible Scars?

/

No. Gastric sleeve is performed using small incisions that are very difficult to notice, even when people are up close. In fact, thanks to the SILS (single-incision laparoscopic surgery) method, trained bariatric surgeons can now complete a sleeve gastrectomy with one small incision hidden in the belly button.

Alternatives to Gastric Sleeve

OTHER BARIATRIC SURGERY OPTIONS

If you are not a good candidate for gastric sleeve surgery, all of our locations in Mexico offer other options for surgical weight loss.
Gastric Bypass Revision
Gastric Sleeve
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is one of the most effective and popular bariatric procedures available today. It restricts the amount of calories a person can consume and limits calorie absorption during digestion.
Duodenal
Duodenal Switch
A duodenal switch can help limit calorie consumption and absorption. The weight loss procedure involves reducing the patient’s stomach size as well as bypassing and rerouting part of the small intestine.
LAP-BAND Revision
Lap-Band
Also known as gastric banding, Lap-Band® surgery reduces the size of the stomach using an adjustable silicone band. This band can be removed, meaning that the weight loss procedure is completely reversible.
